smart e-commerce

client: St. Cloud Radio Marketplace
business: Leighton Broadcasting owns twelve radio stations in three Minnesota markets
background: In an effort to build loyalty from their advertising customers, Leighton began offering to sell discounted gift certificates to local businesses in exchange for air time advertising.

How it works:

If a retailer normally sells a product for $100.00, Leighton will sell a certificate for the product to the general public at a discounted rate, say $70.00. The retailer will then recieve a $100.00 credit towards advertising.

It's a win-win for everyone: The public obtains products and services for less, the retailer can purchase advertising at a discount, and Leighton builds customer loyalty.
challenge: www.StCloudRadioMarketPlace.com is not your traditional e-commerce website. In addition to standard features such as a shopping cart, product categories, inventory management, and credit card acceptance, there were also three unique issues:
  1. Instead of shipping an actual deliverable product, Leighton Broadcasting sells pieces of paper which a customer then redeems at a local business for a reduced price. The "products" would only exist in a database, and managing virtual inventory can be more tricky then real inventory.
  2. Some vendors choose to sell an unlimited number of products, but want to limit the number sold in a month.
  3. Printing duplicate, or fraudulent certificates would need to be prevented.
solution:

Traditional SKU based inventory management systems deal with:

  • Adding and removing inventory
  • Purchase Price vs. Sold Price
  • Re-ordering when stock is low
  • Shipping.

IntelliSoft built a unique application built around virtual inventory:

  • Inventory is created vs. purchased
  • Retail Price vs. Discount Price
  • Quantity can be set to infinite but with limits on sales per month
  • Certificates are printed and embossed, then mailed to customers or picked up at the Leighton Office
results:

St. Cloud Radio Market Place has developed a large and loyal customer base who purchases certificates on a regular basis.

As a result, they have also gained a wide base of advertising customers who look to Leighton as a source for building their own business.
